Ethanol Fuel
We get lots of questions about preventing the headaches ethanol-enhanced fuels can potentially cause in boat engines. Here’s some background, and things you can do to help prevent any issues in your boat’s fuel system. Ethanol has hygroscopic solvency properties. That’s a fancy term for A) it attracts and absorbs water, and B) it loosens debris in your fuel system. To help combat the issues these properties may cause, follow these simple four steps:

Do not
Mix ethanol blended fuel with regular fuel
Do
Periodically rinse top of tank and tank compartment with fresh water
Annually conduct a detailed inspection of all fuel system components
Check access plates on fuel tank hatches for water leaks; replace o-rings as needed
Replace fuel filter/water separators on an annual basis
Keep tanks full during long-term storage
Add fuel additives to fuel that will not be used for 60-90 days
